Excerpts from the Book:
In its folded state, "Fotokor No. 1" takes up little space, and its 9x12 cm format has the advantage that the pictures do not require intermediate enlargement. This camera can be used for various types of photography. A beginner photographer will best learn photography using the "Fotokor No. 1" camera. The next type of device is the camera on struts "Tourist". Its front board does not tilt down, but extends forward on side struts, simultaneously stretching the bellows. The "Tourist" camera is used for shooting on plates of 6.5x9 cm size. It is equipped with the "Industar t" anastigmat with a relative aperture of 1:3.5 and a focal length of 10.5 cm. In the "Tourist" camera, the distance between the lens and the matte glass does not change, and focusing is done by rotating the front lens of the objective. This camera is not very convenient for training and is not suitable for photographing very close objects, reproductions, etc. The lenses of the "Fotokor No. 1" and "Tourist" cameras are mounted in the shutter - a device designed to allow light to pass through the lens at the right moment and affect the plate.
For developing, the following substances are needed:
- Developer. This is a chemical solution consisting of one or two organic substances with an alkali. For a beginner, it makes no sense to make it up on your own at first; it is better to buy a ready-made dry developer in a photographic store (in a glass or cardboard "cartridge"), which must be dissolved exactly in the amount of pure hot boiled water indicated on the label, and then cooled to room temperature.
It is recommended to buy a developer under the names: "Metol-Hydroquinone No. 1" or "Para-Aminophenol-Hydroquinone No. 2".
In case someone wants to make the developer themselves, here are two recipes. Metol-Hydroquinone Developer:
| Water |
500 cc |
| Metol |
3 g |
| Sulfite (crystal) |
35 g |
| Hydroquinone |
2.5 g |
| Potassium Carbonate |
