Photography (from the Greek "light writing") appeared in Ukraine in the summer of 1839, just a few months after its invention. The period from the 1890s to the 1910s can be considered the "golden age" of Ukrainian photography without exaggeration. The author of a new popular science publication dedicated to the 175th anniversary of Ukrainian photography, renowned photographer and photography researcher Oleksandr Trachun, refutes the common belief about the absence of a photographic tradition and school in Ukraine. He convincingly demonstrates that the works of domestic masters from various times were on par with the best European examples, as evidenced by the numerous awards they received at photo exhibitions in Europe and America. The book traces the history of Ukrainian photography from its inception to the present day through names and genres. The new edition includes over 800 unique photographs from the author's and other museum and private collections, bringing to life events and figures from national history.
